when i first saw the worlds "speak visual." i as comic artist first thought about comics. because thats what comics do better then any other type of art (at least if you ask me.)
it also helps i've been reading scott mcclouds book "making comics."
at first i thought making a comic of guy drawing the logo on the wall, and how can i better get the point of what this contest is all about. not just adding the logo somewhere on my drawing in some interesting way, but using the logo to tell a story to tell story (not much of a story i know).
comics are all about telling a story with pictures. even when i decide to do "real" art (more like modern and pop art) or when i work on single illustrations. telling a story or getting an idea across should be my mission.
like many i saw the claw makes and thought of prehistoric images... but if you think about language and where our the alphabet came from. it all started with cave men painting on walls. guys trying to express themselves the only way they could.
my first idea was to draw a comic hero... like a super man type ripping his shirt off and having the comic play-out on his logo. that would have been cool... but had nothing to do with what the contest is all about.
i knew that drawing an artist in this comic was the key (the real hero after all)... and in the end i just drew myself. lol. i think it better expresses how it's me telling you the viewer how i choose to express myself as a person.
now the layout (using the claw) is not something i'd normally do or would really work in a comic. but i think at the very least it worked in this case.
i did alot of thinking doing this peace... as if it was a real freelance job. i didn't just sit and draw the first thing that came to my head. and just thing about how it would look, or making it pretty. the concept had to be worked out first and then how i was gonna best carry that out. i don't feel like i see that in most of the submissions i've seen.
if i had more time i could have done a better job with the art. but that's the thing about comics. pretty pictures isn't what grabs fans... ok it may at first but to keep them comin back you need to connect with them at a human level. if you can get your point across clearly your fans will keep comin back or more.
